New Technology Services at Meyer Library

Web View | Print View

by Allan Chen and Alan Hebert

Academic Computing has expanded its technology services and rearranged its computers and other equipment on the first and second floors of Meyer Library. The following are highlights of these additions and changes:

Change to Multimedia Studio and Other Media Locations

On Meyer Library's second floor, the media capture and editing (e.g., audio, video, scanning) services have been rearranged. Nine Apple G5 and two Dell Dimension multimedia capture and editing workstations are located in the Multimedia Studio. Two Apple G5 and two Dell Dimension workstations have been relocated to the main second floor cluster. Scanners have been moved to both second floor locations and are now available on both platforms. Video dubbing stations have been moved to the area formerly occupied by the scanning stations.

New Media File Server

A new, large-capacity file server is now available for temporary media storage in the Multimedia Studio. Multimedia users can use this central storage option for files such as DV projects and scanned images. Be advised that this is strictly temporary storage. Students and other users of the Multimedia Studio are encouraged to maintain their own personal backup for important data (i.e., via external FireWire drives). Authentication is not required to store the files.

Automatic Document Feed Scanners

A Macintosh G5 and Dell PC in the Multimedia Studio have been equipped with OCR software and scanners possessing Automatic Document Feeders. These units will enable patrons to more efficiently scan large quantities of individual sheets.

Wide-Format Printing

An Epson 9600 wide-format printer (also known as a plotter) is now available on Meyer Library's second floor. Patrons can print up to 4' x 6' at a flat rate of $45/print. Two image/graphics-oriented PCs on the second floor are available to patrons for editing and printing. Sample prints to demonstrate quality and information to consider prior to plotting is on display on the second floor. You must have a valid Stanford ID and funds available in your print account to use this service.

Multimedia and Printing Services on First Floor

Meyer Library's first floor now has four multimedia editing stations and a printer. The multimedia editing stations consist of two Macintosh G5 and two Dell PC workstations, along with two Epson 3200 flatbed scanners (one on each platform). The printer is a black and white laser jet printer (Roseanne). This relocation of equipment from the second floor offers students and the University community 24-hour multimedia editing, scanning, and printing services.

Workstations Added to First Floor

Workstations have been added to the 24-hour Study Room (room 160) and to the Meyer first floor lobby. This includes the addition of PCs in both locations.

Meyer Classroom 183 Upgraded

Classrom 183, on Meyer's first floor, received a major upgrade this past summer. It now includes 16 new Slimline Dell GX270's, plus one Instructor's station. The new machines are running Windows XP and include Microsoft Office, the range of Adobe products, and all of the major Macromedia software packages. You can display the Instructor's station screen on an LCD projector in the room, so that everyone can see it. You can also bring in your laptop and display its desktop through the projector, too. This classroom is ideal for hands-on instruction in PC applications. The room has been rearranged so that it is more discussion-friendly, but the computers are just a chair-swivel away. You can reserve Meyer Classroom 183 by sending email to classrooms@acomp.stanford.edu.

Other technology-enhanced classrooms in Meyer Library include Meyer 182, 184 and the second floor Flexible Class-Lab, all of which offer projection equipment and instructor workstations. Meyer 143 has 17 Macintosh iMac machines. For more information about these classrooms, or to schedule the use of one of them, please visit:

Tresidder LaIR Has More PCs

The Tresidder LaIR computer cluster has more PC's this year. It now includes 16 slimline Dell GX270s. These systems are running Windows XP and have all the standard applications that students need. Tresidder Lair still includes a number of OS X Macintosh systems. It is open 24 hours a day and printing is available.
