Every year, ITSS recommends a minimum standard for desktop computers for administrative or general use. These standards help ensure that your computer has adequate performance and current security settings, and is compatible with common applications used on campus.
The recommendations for current, supported computing platforms for 2004 -2005 are:
Windows 2000 or Windows XP
Pentium IV
512 MB RAM
Mac OS X v10.3:
G4 processor
512 MB RAM

If your Windows or Macintosh computer falls below this threshold, you should replace or upgrade it this year. If you intend to buy a new computer, Stanford has negotiated special pricing and bundles with Dell and Apple.
