Academic Computing continues to enhance the first and second floor facilities in Meyer Library to better accommodate ongoing programs and the needs of its users.
Additions and Enhancements on the First Floor
Three diner-style seating areas, accommodating 2 to 4 users, have been added to the first floor in the lobby area. The seating style provides the opportunity for collaborative discussion and blends with other offerings in the lobby that include cluster computers, Web stations, multimedia stations, GroupSpace (the multi-screened collaboration area), and soft seating. (See also Try a GroupSpace for Collaborative Computer Work in this issue.) The resulting space provides users with a versatile computing and social environment.
The 24-hour study room, which is also on the first floor in Meyer 160, now has a PC and Mac computer cluster, providing students with additional access to computing resources. The 24-hour study room also includes large study tables where students can spread their research materials for quiet study.
Substantial Changes on the Second Floor
The second floor of Meyer Library has undergone substantial changes with more to come. The MultiMedia Studio (MMS) was moved from the 220 area to the floor space in front of the Meyer Desk Consulting area. Partitions have been installed around the MMS, defining this unique service area provided by Academic Computing. See also Multimedia Services in Meyer Library in this issue.
The Disability Resource Center has moved from the 280 to the 220 area (where the MMS was previously housed). This move allows the DRC to provide workshops for students and others. The 280 area will be seeing renovations as the Language Lab creates a new classroom/presentation area for Fall 2006. This new area, a collaborative effort among the Libraries, Academic Computing, the Language Center and Humanities & Sciences, will better support the needs of language instruction and enable language instructors to import some of the teaching concepts they developed in Wallenberg Hall.
Finally, there have been enhancements to the area adjacent to and along the second floor window wall towards Green Library. Soft seating, study tables, bean bags, and workstation tables provide a mix of seating options for students and others to enjoy the view, read a book, or utilize their laptop. The second floor still accommodates a number of PC and Mac computers for students and others with SUNet IDs. See also Wide Format Printing in Meyer Library in this issue.
Wireless is available throughout the first and second floors of Meyer. Thus, Academic Computing provides accommodation for changing program needs on the first and second floors of Meyer Library and offers patrons options that combine versatility and flexibility to meet their individual or group needs.
