SCOLA, a multilingual, news service is now available for Stanford students and faculty on the Web at:

The service provides a week's worth of news broadcasts from 70 different countries in over 20 languages. The service has been made available through the Stanford Language Center and is only available to users with valid SUNet IDs.

SCOLA does not stream the video but rather offers entire 30-minute programs for download. Users can archive the entire Mpeg files to their hard drives or even to portable USB drives. This treasure trove of new authentic content has been a boon to language programs. The video clips can be delivered through CourseWork or played in the classroom. Individual Stanford students and faculty can also watch the programs at their leisure. (See also CourseWork Gets Ready for Spring Quarter in this issue.)

The Stanford Digital Language Lab has posted detailed instructions on its Web site about how to access the video on scola.org. (See direct links below.) A special login name and password are required and are included in the Language Lab's documentation. The news broadcasts are delivered in MPEG-4 format and require that QuickTime be installed on the user's computer.
