by Karen Rondesvedt

Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources (SULAIR) now offers access for the Stanford community to a database of statistics from Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The database, another one from East View Information Services, is called Universal Database of Russian and CIS Statistical Publications. It can be found on SULAIR Database lists as "Russian and CIS Statistical Publications, Universal Database of." It can also be accessed directly from a Stanford Internet connection or a Stanford proxy server at:

What Publications Does It Include?

As the name suggests, the database consists of online versions of publications also put out in limited print runs on paper. The 101 publications included are compiled and published by the State Committee of the Russian Federation on Statistics (GOSKOMSTAT) and the Interstate Statistical Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Most of them are in Russian. There are also a few in English. In addition, some of the Russian ones include tables of contents and table titles in English. Online coverage typically begins in the mid-1990s, but some of the data go back much further than that.

Although SULAIR has been subscribing to some of the included titles in paper format, the database includes many more. In addition, the online format allows searching for statistical information in multiple publications and multiple issues at once. The user can also search within reports, tables, and graphs. All tables are in HTML format, which can be copied and pasted into Excel.

What Subjects Does it Cover?
