Stanford Desktop Tools is the new secure authentication tool for Stanford email and systems.
The Stanford Desktop Tools application provides three main functions:
- Secure authentication for various services at Stanford.
- Updates for site-licensed software.
- Easy access to Stanford OpenAFS (if it is installed) via a pop-up menu.

Why Do I Need Stanford Desktop Tools?
Stanford Desktop Tools configures Kerberos for use at Stanford. Kerberos provides secure authentication for various services at Stanford, such as the Sundial calendar and Stanford OpenAFS. Installing Stanford Desktop Tools will make your SUNet ID and password more secure.
What about MacLeland or PC-Leland?
Stanford Desktop Tools is the replacement for PC-Leland and MacLeland. PC-Leland or MacLeland is automatically uninstalled when you install Stanford Desktop Tools. When you install Stanford Desktop Tools, the familiar MacLeland/PC-Leland icon will be replaced with the Stanford Desktop Tools icon.
When Do I Need to Upgrade?
You should upgrade before April 2008. If you're not ready right now, it's okay to wait. Choose a time that is comfortable for you.
Why Would I Wait Before Upgrading?
- If you haven't upgraded to Mac OS 10.4.
- If you haven't upgraded to Oracle Calendar v.10.
- If you are using a non-English version of Windows.
- If you use UNIX/Spires (SPIDERS, FAAS, SUFIN, SNAP, NSI).
- If you are working on a time-sensitive project like year-end close or Commencement.
