SULAIR Improves Access to Databases and Articles

Web View | Print View

by Karen Kalinsky

In November 2006, Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources (SULAIR) upgraded its Databases and Articles Web site to offer improved access to a wide variety of research resources in most subject areas. New features include a keyword search box and browse by subject categories.

The enhanced Databases and Articles Web site offers improved access to a wide variety of research resources in most subject areas. New features include a keyword search box and browse by subject categories.

Links to the new Databases and Articles Web site are at the top of most pages in the SULAIR Web space. Just click on Go next to the Databases and articles drop-down menu. You can also access the new site directly at:

Tips on Using It

On the new site, you can choose to either browse by title or subject, or search by keyword. The titles listed now include descriptions that you can choose to hide (default) or display (click on + or click on Show all descriptions).

Browse by Subject: Click on one of the approximately 50 subject categories to see a list of databases related to that subject. For example, choosing Biological Sciences shows a result of 40 databases.

Browse by Title: Select Browse by Title for an alphabetical list of all titles. You can use the Results per page drop-down menu to change the setting to 10, 20, 50, or back to ALL if so desired.

Keyword Search: Try this when you want to search for databases across multiple subjects, or when the subject you are looking for is not one of those listed. In the Search this list box, enter any number of words to find databases with those words in their titles or descriptive data, or you may restrict the search to titles only by selecting that option.

For example, a keyword search for title "french language" retrieves 1 database that has both the words "french" and "language" in the title. The asterisk (*) is the truncation symbol. So searching for the list by all fields for "french language*" retrieves a result of 20 databases that have the word "french" and any word beginning with "language" anywhere in the title or description.

Daily Updates

The new Web site is kept up to date with changes and additions by a nightly extract from the Socrates (Stanford's online catalog) records for the databases. There will be a link on the new Databases and Articles Web site to the previous Databases and Articles Web site, but that site will not be kept up to date with changes or additions.
